Primary
Program
(Kindergarten – 3rd Grade)
The Middletown Elementary Primary Program nurtures the continuing growth
of children’s knowledge and understanding of themselves and the world. Developmentally
appropriate practices; continuous
progress; authentic assessment; qualitative reporting methods; professional
teamwork; and positive parent involvement characteristics provide a safe,
caring and stimulating environment in which children grown and in which
learning flourishes.
At Middletown Elementary, students are
grouped for a purpose. Primary students develop skills in reading and
writing and in critical thinking and problem solving, while creating self-esteem
and positive attitudes toward learning. There is an emphasis on the basic
skills necessary for students to become successful, lifelong learners.
During the final year of the Primary Program, students may be screened
for the Advance Program.
Every six weeks, parents receive progress/interim
reports that include brief descriptions of how the student is doing in
a number of key areas. Those reports reflect how well students are mastering
skills and concepts based on their writing, teacher observation, classroom
activities and other tasks.

Intermediate
Program
(4th & 5th Grade)

Program Intermediate students.
Student’s progress is reported to parents regularly throughout the year,
using the traditional A-B-C-D system. Grades are based on portfolios, tests,
class participation, teacher observation, and other tools. |

 Technology
Program
Middletown Elementary was awarded a JCPSNet Project Grant which provided
the school with network drops, making it possible for workstations throughout
the school to serve as access points for electronic mail (e-mail) and the
Internet. Middletown Elementary is on a system-wide school network as well
as on the Internet. A proxy server is used to filter inappropriate sites.
All students need a signed parent permission form on file to be able to
use the Internet for instructional purposes. It is very important that each
student has a permission form in order to fully implement the Internet into
our instructional program.
Middletown has a computer lab
equipped with 32 state of the art computers, with a full-time
certified teacher who provides instruction to all students. Each
classroom has between four and six computers. Middletown's student
to computer ratio is better than the
5:1 ratio required by the state. All students from pre-K to 5th
grade receive instruction in the lab at least once a week. Basic keyboarding,
database, spreadsheet, and word processing are some of the skills our
students are expected to learn. All students in grades three or five are
assessed alternately every two years. The assessment is rigorous
and includes keyboarding, word processing, database, spreadsheet, slide
show, and telecommunications sections.
